Evaluation of Phase Change Materials for Personal Cooling Applications

Eleven phase change materials (PCMs) for cooling humans in heat-stressed conditions were evaluated their characteristics. Effects of packaging material and segmentation also investigated. Sample packs with a different type PCM (water- oil-based PCMs, gels, inorganic salts) or (aluminum, TPU, TPU + neoprene) investigated on hotplate. Cooling capacity, duration, power determined. Secondly, pack hexagon compartments was compared to an unsegmented version similar content. decreased whereas duration increased increasing melting temperature. The water-based PCMs showed >2x higher than other but relatively short-lived. flexible gels salts did not demonstrate plateau power, compromising potential. Using aluminum indifferent.
